Show and Tell: New Bedding

Musings of A Beautiful Mess

See my pretty new bedding? The bedding that isn't TOO girly or TOO masculine? Not to shabby. Do you ALSO notice how my curtains don't even match my pretty new bedding? Nope, not even a LITTLE bit! It's a little on the tacky side, I agree.

This is how we got our new bedding to not match our curtains. I'll tell you this so you won't have the same problem I do....
We went to that fun store that loves to suck us dry, affectionately know as "wally world" in our house. We went there after we had already been to a store to buy some items we needed to work out with. We were kind of on a time crunch and only went there to get a few items. We remembered we needed a bed skirt because apparently you can't dry a bed skirt? I wasn't aware of this until AFTER I had washed it. So, we're strolling down the isles and Husband sees a really nice bed set. We never agree on a bed set and have had the same one for YEARS. We didn't even buy that one, my parents gave it to us. I liked it AND he liked it AND the price wasn't too bad. We're looking at it and I wasn't even thinking about our curtains, I was just so excited that we were agreeing on something. Upon looking at it more closely, we realized it didn't come with a bed skirt. The ONE thing we really need. That pretty bed set went back on the shelf and I cried a bit. It was SO nice, too! Oh well, at least Husband is committed to looking for a new one. All hope is not lost.

We go down another isle and we see a few sets that either he liked and I didn't or I liked and he didn't. Finally we agree on the one we got. It's has some blue in it, as well as some beige as does our curtains. The funny part about all of this is that I DID pick up the one that matches our curtains, but we thought that would be TOO much red, so we both nixed it. We purchased it and came home to make our bed.

The set is perfect, it has sheets, pillow cases, a bed skirt AND comforter that ALL match. We're happily making our bed and joking around and it's all made. It all looks so nice, until...I look up at our curtains. "Uhhh babe? This set doesn't match our curtains! Not even a little bit!" That's what I said in a panic. He said, "you said it would look fine." "well clearly I was wrong, what are we gonna do?!" Still pretty panicked. His answer was "Oh it's fine, it's not even that big of a deal. Nobody cares." Because he is a man and has NO idea what I'm talking about, I leave the subject alone. Obviously he doesn't care that our curtains don't match our bedding, although I can't really blame him. It really isn't THAT big of a deal, but it's still bugging me.

Thankfully those curtains can go in our front room and we can get new ones for our room OR we can buy new bedding because I washed our comforter today and it TORE! The corner came apart and I can see the batting on the inside. I could sew it, but I haven't even had it for a week! Oh and I'm not all that great at sewing. Plus, if I do sew it, it'll just come unraveled again when I wash it. I'm a bit miffed about it, but then again..you get what you pay for. The whole thing was less then $50. Oh well...live and learn, right?!

It is amazing when husband and wife agree on bedding! My first trip to I.kea I was amazed and bought a great duvet cover and it was only $50! Less than a month later there were holes in it like a mouse was knawing on my bedding. I.kea is great for many things, but maybe not bedding.

Good job on the bedding...to me there is just nothing better than buying all new stuff for the bed, it gets me so excited for sleepytime!

so fun to have new bedding! and to agree! me and my husband have opposite taste and he's one of those guys who actually cares about design, so we often have a hard time compromising too.

i say sew the comforter and look for some new cheap curtains!!

That stinks that it came undone!

What a bummer that it didn't match the curtains and it started coming undone. I would take it back and ask for a new one.

I like the manly looking bedding myself. Rich colors and stripes. Jase doesn't give a damn what it all looks like he just wants it to be comfy. I never get matching curtains I have my black blackout curtains so at noon my room is darker than a cave.

When we get the new house I'm going to go all "whore" in our room and have it all red!

My husband always agree with my choices because he figures it's the quickest way out of those shops. I'm with Kristin, I'd take it back.

It looks nice! Matching-schmatching...

Hope all works out as you decide whether you're going to return it or sew it and get new curtains. :)

Ha, I hate shopping with my husband for somewhat similar reasons. Also, he never wants to buy anything and hates shopping. So when I dragged him to IKEA recently, and he kept saying we needed things, I was like, "OK!" Then I had to spend an entire weekend putting all that damn furniture together.

But ANYway - congrats on agreeing on bedding! You certainly can't expect a man to understand why matching matters. Sounds like you already have a few ideas for making it work out in the end, though.

Really like the new bedding....and TOTALLY dig the fact it does NOT match the curtains!

Looks like our bedroom!

That story really made me laugh. Picking things out when two people have to agree on them can be really hard. I have kind of a "thing" about bedding. Not that I always have really nice bedding, but I always WANT really nice bedding.

I'm impressed that he weighed in. "We could really use some new sheets...huh?" is code in my house for "you pick them and whatever they look like is fine...no one else will see the bed, right?"

ha!

My bedding matches my curtains because I bought extra sheets and had them made into curtains. My husband totally does not appreciate the matching, but it makes me happy.

That's so annoying that it tore, regardless of how much it cost! I bought new pillows a week or so ago, and discovered (after feathers started snowing all over my bedroom) that the seam has already come apart. Thankfully, I still have the bag and the receipt, because I'm getting myself a new one!

do you think they would take it back? I know you washed it, but lots of people wash before use and you shouldn't have to deal with it being destroyed after one wash...
so cool that you both agreed - I decided my DH didn't care enough about what the bedding looked like to have a say in it...i didn't go too girly - it is mint green and brown

Boys just don't understand what it takes to 'match' decor. Since we repainted, we need new curtains in the living room and dining room and he keeps getting after me to pick out something new. I try to tell him it isn't that easy, but he JUST DOESN'T GET IT.
